PortMiami proximity to Miami International Airport , which ranks top among US airports in international cargo volume .
The cargo industry has played a vital role in the local economy for decades , and the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated this impact , as cargo continued to move successfully from ship to shelf throughout the pandemic . In anticipation of the ‘ big ship ’ era , PortMiami has invested more than $ 1 billion in capital infrastructure projects over the last ten years , the largest of which was the PortMiami Deep Dredge project , to accommodate larger ships .
Following the completion of the Panama Canal expansion in 2014 , PortMiami deepened the port from 42 feet to 50 feet , enabling Super Post Panamax Megaships to enter the US for the first time . This project saw PortMiami become the only major logistics hub south of Virginia capable of handling fully laden Post Panamax vessels for several years , and the closest deepwater port to the expanded Panama Canal on the Atlantic Seaboard .
Global hub
PortMiami offers Super Post-Panamax gantry cranes that can service cargo vessels up to 22 containers wide , nine containers above deck , and eleven containers below deck . In partnership with SFCT , PortMiami received electric rubber-tire gantry cranes in 2023 as part of a densification project , which will enable SFCT to handle 33 percent more containers . Also , the completion of an ondock intermodal rail service in partnership with Florida East Coast Railway ( FECR ) now enables operators to deliver goods from the port to 70 percent of the US population within four days .
With such investments , PortMiami can seamlessly expedite the movement of goods
