After the Great War ended in 1918 , David was operating a drastically reduced fleet , which resulted in the company ’ s withdrawal from the tender for the mail contract . Thankfully , in 1928 , David joined forces with LMS Railway and Coast Lines Ltd to create a new company called David MacBrayne . In 1948 , the government took over LMS Railway ’ s shares in the company and acquired the ships . Five years later , the state-owned Scottish Transport Group ( STG ) was formed . The STG not only operated David MacBrayne ’ s services but also took charge of the Caledonian Steam Packet Company on the Clyde , as well as the Scottish Bus Company . Soon after , all three shipping companies were amalgamated and renamed Caledonian MacBrayne . However , in 1990 , Caledonian MacBrayne broke away from the umbrella of STG and became wholly owned by the Scottish Government .
Caledonian MacBrayne created CalMac 16 years later , using the new company to bid for the Scottish Government contract to operate the ferry services in the Clyde and Hebrides areas . Upon winning the bid , Caledonian MacBrayne changed its name to Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd ( CMA ) and retained ownership of the ferry boats and piers which it leases to CalMac . It is important to note that CMA is entirely owned by Scottish Ministers and is separate from CalMac . Although both companies have the same shareholder , each has its own board , and their relationship is solely contractual . Today , CalMac has delegated authority at 17 statutory harbors on behalf of owner CMA . Moreover , the company ships an average of 10,738 coaches and 1,431,631 cars annually . In 2018 , one of CalMac ’ s busiest years to date , the company carried an astonishing total of 5,309,771 passengers .
