Daniella alludes to the port ’ s commitment to sustainability , which has been a key area of investment . As part of a $ 4.2-billion improvement program centered around Net Zero , PortMiami recently announced the launch of shore power , which allows cruise ships to turn off their engines and plug into landside electrical power while docked . When ships are berthed , they need electricity for lights , refrigeration , operating equipment , and other vessel functions , but using landside power reduces emissions by up to 98 percent .
PortMiami is the first major cruise port on the US eastern seaboard to offer power shore capability at five cruise berths . In 2024 , it is predicted that 21 cruise ships will be outfitted for shore power specifically , and PortMiami will have more than 350 vessel calls plugging into the shore power system . Daniella reflected on the project in a recent press release : “ Shore power is a great example of progress in tourism and clean energy
converging . Together , we are creating jobs , expanding our economy , and preparing to meet the dynamic needs of tomorrow .”
